The #1 Lesson That Covid- 19 Has Taught Us

When we look at the positive cases of COVID -19 in New York, the areas most affected are black and brown neighborhoods. The Bronx- a borough with predominantly Hispanic and Black residents, has significantly high rates of hospitalizations and deaths related to COVID-19. In contrast, hospitalizations and death rates were lowest in Park Slope Brooklyn, which is composed of a predominantly white population. This disparity is not only limited to New York. In Michigan, Black people make up 15% of the state population but represent 35% of people diagnosed with COVID-19. In Illinois, Black people represent about 16% of the state population- but account for over 30% of positive COVID-19 cases. Louisiana has a population of about 4,627,000. Blacks people represent about one-third of the state population but 70% of COVID-19 deaths. One of the main reasons why Black and Brown people die from COVID-19 is the higher rates of chronic, underlying health conditions. Having a health condition like diabetes, COPD, asthma, hypertension and obesity, means that a person with COVID-19 may require hospitalization and intensive care.

The # 1 lesson that we have learned from COVID- 19 is that good health matters

Take back control of our health by doing these 3 simple things:

  1. Eat Whole Foods

A diet rich in healthy fats and a wide assortment of fruits and vegetables provides the body with optimal nutrients, vitamins and minerals. At every meal, try to eat the rainbow. Eliminate highly processed foods and reduce sugar intake. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, does this food naturally exist in nature? If the answer is no, your body can do with it. Supplements are an exception.

  1. Reduce Stress

Excessive stress worsens or increases the risk of conditions like obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, depression, gastrointestinal problems, and asthma. When our bodies are stressed, it naturally produces the hormone cortisol. Cortisol affects fat distribution by causing fat to be stored centrally—around the organs. We can't always control stressful situations. But we can control how we respond to them. Practising a deep breathing exercise reduces stress levels, relaxes the mind, lowers your heart rate and regulates blood pressure.

  1. Move Your Body

Consistent exercise helps the body combat health conditions and diseases. Also, when we exercise, it releases mood enhancing hormones which can help with anxiety and depression. Find an exercise that you enjoy doing, so you are more inclined to be consistent.
