It all started with a commercial, specifically the state farm commercial where the wife is upset about her “she-shed” being burnt to the ground. I didn't find the commercial interesting, or funny. What stood out to me was the concept of a female version of a man cave. I became obsessed with having my own she- shed. I imagined it with a hammock, and overgrown with plants, a hammock, and as much rattan as I could fit into there. But living in New York, where the average cost of a square foot is $1,319, having an entire room to myself was highly unlikely. I wasn't able to have a she -shed, but I did manage to create a sacred space, in a sunlit corner of my apartment.
Having this space has been essential to my mental, emotional and physical health. Our lives are so busy and noisy that we often forget about the healing power of silence. When we're out in the world, it's not usually possible to control the noise level. At home, we can usually turn down the noise. In the morning, I do my meditations on a floor pillow. I use this space to journal, to relax with a glass of wine, and to do my Buddhist prayers in the evening. I've begun encouraging clients to create their own sacred spaces. Just like everyone's health and wellness journey is different, so is what goes into your sacred space. There are, however, some elements that are efficient in invoking a calming and rejuvenating energy.
Keep it Clean
Clutter messes with you physically, mentally, and also spiritually. Make sure your space is clear and feels light.
Decorate for You
What soothes you, inspires you, captivates you? I love nature. Mountains and rivers are places that I enjoy visiting. In my sacred space, I have a small jar of water that I bottled from a visit to Las Tinajas, Puerto Rico.
Add Sacred Self Care Items
Incense, a singing bowl, flowers, shells, gemstones, essential oils with a diffuser, a battery operated water fountain - these are examples of sacred items. Secondly, think of incorporating all the elements into your sacred space.
Remember that this space is yours. Honor your heart's desires. Trust your intuition to show you where to put it, what to include, how to use it — and see where it takes you.
